Meet Your Destiny: Mining the Collective Wisdom
AKA "Day of the Post-It Note"
LIVE NOTES FROM MONDAY, January 26, 2009
At the beginning of the morning, participants wrote Destiny-specific questions or issues on post-it notes. Then, they stuck these topics on large easel sheets, specific to the broad topics shown below. Then, in a general session, Ruth led a discussion about the topics on each sheet for 30 minutes each. Participants shared their knowledge and expertise with the group. Items that were more one-on-one in nature, for Follett, or more appropriate to another setting or way of sharing the information, were set aside temporarily. One hour in the afternoon will be set aside to take care of some of this information, or other plans will be shared for addressing all topics. Hands-on problem solving took place after lunch.
Home Page & Visual Searches
- Needed: HTML code for adding a banner to your home page
- Needed: A list of schools with developed home pages so others can get ideas
- Needed: Step by step instructions for working with elements of a visual search (graphics)
Catalog & Searching
- Destiny Quest: Pros and Cons of using. How much bandwidth does it really take?
- Question: How to use Destiny with Safari Montage videos (new possibilities in version 9.0?)
- Confusion about using, manipulating Follett e-books
- E-books: lots of confusion about different products and possibilities for using them
- Follett question: Keyword search is not searching the full record. Setting?
User Empowerment
- Version 9 question: Now students can create their own account? Can it be turned off? (check back into after lunch and share with the group)
- Can book reviews be pulled into resource lists?
- Future workshop? Using Destiny in setting up bookgroups. Giving logins to students, and getting them to do book reviews for the books they are reading.
- How can you search for books in your collection that have been reviewed? Can you?
- Recommendations. As students are learning to use Library Thing, they may do more recommendations.
- Different access levels: examples of specifics might be needed
Cataloging
- Access Pennsylvania and Library of Congress for additional records: http://nlln.org/howto/Addingz39.doc.pdf
- Lots of positive comments on the usefulness of Access PA
- Questions about adding digital content to the catalog. Demo was done, but a step-by-step set of instructions may be helpful to others. Is it too specific to this specific version of the software to stand the test of time?
- VoiceThread as discussed last night, may actually be digital content for specific titles too?
- Question: How to catalog URL's? separate issue from Web Path Express
- A demo was done for searching for duplicates. Do we need a written process for doing this? Light discussion of a process you can run during the summer to clean up your records???
- Weeding collections (no time today)
Other
